WOOD ABSTRACTION

A response to Verb List, by Richard Serra. Hand-held and stationary wood working tools were used to manipulate dimensional lumber and create an abstract sculpture that represents the verbs weave, suspend, and cover. I sought to transform a rigid mass of wood into an interactive and fluid sculpture by creating a mesh of chain-maille-esque wood links that could be worn as a headdress— a reference to medieval coifs. The headdress could also be flattened and draped over a cubic wood frame, giving it an architectural form and a new sense of suspension.

The project was made from one pine board (1” x 6” x 6’) and one sheet of plywood (3/8” thick, 4’ x 4’).
