DRAWINGS IN CHARCOAL

I appreciate and prefer charcoal as a drawing medium for is versatility and expressiveness in monochrome.

This self portrait sought to represent my attitude towards appearance and fashion. I worked from a photo as a reference, and included symbols that I found interesting or meaningful.

Cloth rendering developed my shading techniques and attention to detail. I worked directly next to the reference, and refined my drawing over several sessions in order to achieve a realistic representation of the hanging cloth.

The process I depicted in my final drawing is slowing down, shown through five steps. When I need to reflect and understand something, I deliberately seek out ways to slow down, to better appreciate detail and absorb my lived experience. This work offers five vignettes that represent that, connected by a delicate web. The steps are in no particular order yet cannot exist without each other.
